Breast Implants Sydney, Brisbane & Melbourne

The sequence of steps in having Breast Implants inserted by Dr Mayson are as follows:

  1. Book Your Consultation(s)

Dr Mayson believes that as a prospective patient considering Breast Implants you need to be FULLY informed on ALL aspects so that you are then able to make an informed decision as to whether or not to have the procedure.  And in order to convey all that information to you, we need to allocate enough consultation time for you as follows:

If you wish to see Dr Mayson in Sydney you will need TWO consultations:

  1. A very detailed Initial Consultation (lasting around 1½ hours) – to give and explain to you all the detailed information on Breast Implants – followed by:
  2. A Second Consultation (up to 1 hour) to take detailed chest measurements, compare and select implants and decide on the surgical plan that will best achieve the look you desire.

If you are seeing Dr Mayson in Brisbane or Melbourne, for your convenience we merge both consultations into one extra-long Initial Consultation of around 2 hours.

For those patients seeing Dr Mayson in Sydney, please note that in special circumstances (e.g. for interstate/overseas patients, those patients travelling long distances, or those with time constraints) you may be able to have your Second Consultation on the same day as the Initial Consultation in order to avoid the inconvenience of a return trip to Sydney.

At your Initial Consultation Dr Mayson will cover very thoroughly all aspects of Breast Implant Surgery paying particular attention to the topics below to help you better understand the differences between all the various types of Breast Implants. Understanding the differences between various Breast Implants will enable you to more easily choose your preferred implant type, size and shape as well as where they are to be placed and where you would prefer the incisions to be made.  By allocating extra-long consultation times, Dr Mayson is able to explain all the finer aspects of Breast Implant Surgery to you.  In particular, Dr Mayson will cover in detail the following topics:

  • Safety of Silicone Breast Implants
  • Silicone vs Saline Breast Implants – in particular, the differences in terms of ‘feel’ and the relative risks of capsular contracture, rippling, deflation, and the gel ‘bleed’ phenomenon.
  • Breast Implant Surfaces - the differences between Textured (Rough), Smooth and the latest Polyurethane Foam-Covered Silicone Breast Implants (“Furry Brazilians”) which have been shown to dramatically reduce the chances of needing future revision surgery.
  • Breast Implant Shapes – Round Breast Implants & ‘Tear-Drop’ Breast Implants (sometimes called ‘Anatomical’ Breast Implants).
  • Breast Implant Size
  • Breast Implant Incisions – Trans-Umbilical (through the navel), Peri-Areolar (around the areola), Trans-Axillary (through the armpit) and Infra-Mammary (under the breast).
  • Breast Implant Positions – ‘in front of the muscle’, ‘behind the muscle’, Sub-Fascial (in front of the muscle’ but behind its sheath) and ‘Dual Plane Placement’ (an option for those with mild sagging).

2. Schedule Your Procedure

Once you have considered all the information Dr Mayson has given you and you wish to proceed, the next step is to book your procedure.  All bookings, including those for Brisbane, are done through our Sydney Office.  You will then be given a package containing detailed Pre- & Post-Operative Instructions, Prescriptions, and a Pathology Request Form.

3. Pre-Operative Preparations

  1. All patients are required to have pre-operative pathology investigations to exclude any condition that could compromise the safety of the surgery as well as to confirm that they are fit and healthy to undergo anaesthesia and surgery.  These tests are: Full Blood Count, Biochemistry Screening, Coagulation Studies (to exclude any bleeding tendency), Hepatitis B & C screening, and HIV testing.
  2. If you are over 39, or younger with a family history of Breast Cancer, you will also need to have a pre-operative Mammogram/Breast Ultrasound.
  3. Purchase the recommended bra that you will need to wear after your surgery.  The specific type of bra required will vary according to your selected breast implants.
  4. Follow precisely the detailed list in the Pre-Operative Instructions regarding those foods and medications to be avoided in the two weeks prior to your surgery.  The reason you must avoid all foods or medications on the list is that they cause ‘thinning of the blood’ which could result in a hematoma (bleeding into your implant pocket) and require an early return to the Operating Theatre.

4. On the Day of Surgery

Arrive at the Hospital 1½ hours prior to your surgery. In the best interests of patient comfort and safety, Dr Mayson performs all Breast Augmentations under General Anaesthesia and sterile conditions in an fully-accredited Hospital Operating Theatre.

The entire procedure normally takes around two hours.  After two hours in Recovery you will be allowed to go home.  However, please note that you cannot go home alone.  You must arrange for a responsible adult to escort you home and be with you for the next 24 hours, otherwise your procedure could be cancelled.

5. Post-Operative Recovery

Post-Operative discomfort varies with the individual, is relatively short-lived and easily managed with pain relievers. You may also take comfort in the knowledge that Dr Mayson is contactable 24 hours a day after your surgery should you have any questions or concerns.  Unless you have a physically strenuous job, you should be able to return to work within two weeks.  You must avoid strenuous physical activities for the first 3 months (e.g. gym work-outs and some sports) and body-contact sports for 6 months. You must also avoid ‘under-wire’ bras during the first 3 months.  Our staff will provide you with very detailed Post-Operative Instructions on exactly what you should and should not do once you have booked your procedure.

Sutures are to be removed 7-10 days by either Dr Mayson or, if preferred, by your Local Doctor with our written instructions on exactly how they are to be removed and what dressings need to be applied after suture removal.

6. Follow-Up Appointments

All patients are asked to return for routine review 3-4 months after surgery.  Some are asked to also return again 6 or 12 months later.  Please note that Dr Mayson does not charge any fees for such routine follow-up appointments.
