Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast Augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the world today.  Moreover, Breast Augmentation is increasing in demand so rapidly it is predicted to soon take the top spot (source http:/health.ninemsn.com.au/, 1 July 2008)

One of the reasons for its rising popularity is that it is a cosmetic surgical procedure that has an immediate impact on a woman’s self-esteem and self-image while still offering a natural appearance.

Basically, Breast Augmentation is sought by women who have always had small breasts or who have lost breast volume after pregnancy and breast feeding.

Women seeking Breast Augmentation cite the following reasons for doing so:

  • To make shopping for clothes and swimwear easier and more enjoyable by being able to fill the tops of dresses or bikinis.
  • To feel more feminine by increasing their breast size and being more in proportion with the rest of their body.
  • To increase their self-esteem and self-image by looking more feminine.
  • To restore the volume of their breasts lost through pregnancy, breast feeding or weight loss.

Pre-Operative Preparation

  1. In the best interests of patient safety, all patients are required to have pre-operative pathology investigations to ensure they are fit and healthy to undergo anaesthesia and surgery.
  2. If you are over 39, or younger with a family history of Breast Cancer, you will also need to have a Pre-operative Mammogram & Breast Ultrasound.
  3. You will need to purchase a specific type of support bra that must be worn for 3 months after your surgery.
  4. You must follow exactly the detailed Pre-Operative Instructions as to which foods and medications to avoid in the two weeks prior to surgery.

On the Day of Surgery

Arrive at the hospital 1½ hours prior to your surgery. In the best interests of patient comfort and safety, Dr Mayson performs all Breast Augmentations under General Anaesthesia in a sterile Operating Theatre within a fully-accredited Hospital.

The entire procedure normally takes around two hours.  After a further two hours in Recovery you can go home.  However, please note that you cannot go home alone.  You must arrange for a responsible person to escort you home and be with you for the next 24 hours.

Post-Operative Recovery

Naturally, post-operative discomfort varies from person to person but is easily managed by pain-relievers and is relatively short-lived. You can also take comfort in the knowledge that, after your surgery, Dr Mayson is contactable 24 hours a day, every day, should you have any questions or concerns.  Depending on your type of work, most patients are able to return to work within 2 weeks but you must avoid strenuous physical activities for the first 3 months and body-contact sports for 6 months. You must also wear a specific, non-‘under-wire’ bra during the first 3 months.  Dr Mayson will provide you with very detailed Post-Operative Instructions on exactly what you should and should not do as soon as you have booked your procedure.

Follow-Up Appointments

Sutures are removed 7-10 days later.  If you are from out-of-town we can provide detailed instructions for your local doctor on how to remove them.

All patients are asked to return for routine review 3-4 months after surgery, and sometimes 6-12 months later as well.  Dr Mayson does not charge any fees for these routine follow-up appointments.
