Breast Implant Shapes

Implants come in two main shapes:  Round and ‘Tear Drop’ (sometimes called ‘Anatomical’).  Each shape then comes in different volumes and different projections (projection = the amount the implant projects forwards): Low Projection, Medium Projection and High Projection to meet the requirements of each patient.

Round Implant Shapes

Round Breast Implants

  • More fullness at the top.
  • Often the preferred option to restore upper breast volume lost through breast-feeding or weight loss.
  • Can be inserted though any incision location.
  • Being perfectly round, rotation cannot produce any breast shape deformity.

Teardrop Shaped Breast implants

'Tear-Drop' Breast Implants

  • Fuller in the lower half that tapers off towards the top.
  • Produces an attractive straight-line fall from collar bone to nipple.
  • Note: Polyurethane Foam-Covered ‘Tear Drop’ implants cannot rotate like other ‘Tear Drops’ and produce a deformity in shape requiring further surgery to re-align the implant.
  • Can only be inserted through an incision under the breast.

Consequences of Post-Operative Rotation of the Implant

Rotation of the implant cannot produce any visible deformity as the implant is perfectly rounded

Post-operative rotation within the pocket is possible → distorted appearance → revision surgery.
Note: Polyurethane Foam implants do not rotate
